How can I prevent a nail from splitting or cracking when I cut them? Is there a reason why this is happening? Maybe I need new nail clippers?

You probably need to have your clipper blade sharpened, or get a new nail clipper if it's happening a lot. The other way to prevent it is to grind instead of clipping.

Yes the cutting edge is worn out. Get sharpened or replace.

If that doesn't work try and cut smaller pieces off at a time. I have a few dogs that thier nails are so brittle they crack and when I go slower it seems to help.

I've never had any luck with having them sharpened. My favorite trimmmers are the orange handles ones--they work great

New nail clippers and a good, quick, firm stroke. People who hesitate often split the nail....if you need to cut little pieces off until you get confident, then do that. I also find that holding each nail between my and forefinger as I am cutting with my right hand helps to steady the nail and gets a good clean cut.

              sharpened

My Boyfriend sharpened orange ones for me. He made it sharper than the original, and left it with a screw/nut so he can do it again easily. It's sooooo much easier. Also I hear the Blade Guys sharpen nail clipper blades. Otherwise get new like I used to do.

If just one or two dogs, they could have nutritional Deficiencies, and that should be looked at by the owners.

Also, cut the nails right after the bath, this way they have that little bit of extra moisture. Also, if you dremmel- do it right after the bath, they dremmel faster and with less dust.
