  • My Coonhound ripped himself a new one!

Things happen so fast... I came home from a rescue transport and let my dogs out. A few minutes later, I hear them all baying, howling and carrying on. This is my queue to go outside and wrangle them back in the house. My 4 year old male Ninny Sprinkles (the loudest) was just sitting the yard while the others were at the fence going crazy over a Chichi at large. He was sitting, screaming and howling. I thought he was just being his obnoxious hound self. At closer inspection he had two huge holes in his chest! Skin was hanging and blood dripping! I'd say the largest one was 3x4 inches and other a bit smaller, both gaping open. There was scratches and bruising on his chest and down his back legs. I cannot figure out how he did it. My only guess is he got caught on the chainlink during the excitement. The Vet said after they stitched him up that it was a torn wound. I don't know how many stitches he got but I'll certainly count them. He also had to have a drain put in, ew. Poor fella, I think I'll bake him some cookies tonight.

Things do happen fast but I'm glad we avoided an ER trip!

I'll post photos in the morning of my new Franken-Ninny and his grievous wounds. Thanks for listening.

Wow--what beautiful dogs. I hope he's doing alright! Sometimes they get running and focused on something,,I have a large St. Poo who comes in form grooming, with a HUGE "C" shaped scar from his elbow across his ribs and up to the center of his back where he ran into a pine tree after a rabbit and completely filleted the skin back from the muscle. Looks awful.
A few years ago we had a young Lab duck and squeeze back under the bottom of the chain link fence after she's let herself out or the outside run. She saw me coming down the hill to put her back in and mend the fence, and she panicked and went back under. Well, there was a lot of pulled wire hanging on the underside of the fence where she'd chewed, and when she pushed it back the other way to go under, she somehow caught a large wide look of the fence wire (very thick gauge like on most outside dog kennel panels and flat on the end) through the skin of her tuck up and out the underside right next to her nipple. She rolled over on her back as I walked up on her and screamed and peed and then just laid totally still as if in shock. I saw what she'd done thru the outside of the fence and I couldn't believe it. I ran as fast as I could and sat down beside her. Thank God she was either in shock or didn't quite know what to do, but she let me slowly turn her towards me so that the skin wasn't twisted and then I pet her a bit to see her reaction, I thought for sure she'd bite me. She still lay still, so I carefully had to un-thread the hook of fence back thru both her skin on either side and the soft muscle tissue in the middle. It didn't bleed, and there was a tiny little hole on both sides of her tuck up and already some bruising and swelling when I got it out, but that was it. Off to the vet and some anti-Bs and she was fine. When we moved, we left the entire kennel and runs behind and never bought that kind of fencing again. It was AWFUL to see--sorry, I got way off topic... again, I hope he's ok.

Nice picture of your guy he's a looker.

I'm glad he will be alright - probably did come down on those little pointy things on the chain like fence. I would check them all out to see if anyof them are sticking out or sharper than others.

Mayber part of the fence has blood on it?

OMG, poor guy, definitely looks like he got hooked on the fence and started freaking out and ripped it up. Ouch, give him extra hugs and kisses for me!

Well, you know I can't be biased...as I have Sibes. So what I think is he took a look around and thought to his hound-brain self...."hmmmm, small puncture or total evisceration???? I think I'll go w/ total evisceration today."

Boy, they are beautiful dogs in my eyes and that's confirmed thru the lens of your camera.
                You have quite the eye.

And...you also have a hound in a lampshade that prolly needs drains flushed and antibiotics and restricted activity and all that crp for the next 2 weeks. I'm glad those ole coonhunds have you in their corner. I hope they know how good they have it....

You know, I considered getting another breed after my female passed away from cancer. Well, look what happened, I adopted one of fosters couple of weeks ago. I suspect she maybe a Majestic Treehound (she's big and more "jowly" than most English Coonhounds). Now I'm considering keeping her brother as well. Four is a lot, I know. I believe I read you are now up to four, right? Whew! But what can I say, I love these dogs. And yeah, Coonhounds have it bad, they need all the help they can get.

All of them are BUCK WILD! It took him years to chill out even slightly. Hopefully this experience will chill him out even more.

He's on kennel rest and doing really good. Maybe a little bored, but he's always loved being in his kennel.

The glass is less than 1/2 full!

See, you can say I'm "up to four"...but the way I veiw it is I am "down from the 12" I had for almost 17 years! 4 ain't nuthin!

I do have a question...as I was just reading your "dilemma" thread...but I have to go soon...
my experience w/ hounds has been limited to Foxhounds...in a Hunt Kennel.
Generally, they get along extremely well w/ one another, given the large number of dogs housed together as a pack. Hardly ever a confrontation, and even more rarely is blood drawn.
Are Coonhounds similar in this social aspect...seeing as they work as a group too?

We NEVER see Coonhounds around here...which is a shame because I think they are cool dogs.

Is it even possible to train a hound? Years ago I lived in Mississippi and went to a Coon Hound contest (I don't remember what the actual name was) held over a river with hundreds of dogs. I was amazed at the noise of the baying of dogs.. and all the men in overalls! Talk about prey drive...(not the men)...those dogs were amazing! I'd be careful with my cats.

Just to clarify- I'm not new to Coonhounds. I was raised around them and have owned them myself as pets since 1999. I know they get along with each other, I love that. Can I handle it, that's the question, LOL

They are VERY social. Any disagreement is very mild. They do seem to have food aggression issues but again, nothing comes of it. They may rough each other up and bark in each others faces but it fizzles out quick.

Prey drive, it's certainly there and powerful. However, most easily co-exist with other indoor pets. My first English Coonhound lived with a cat and Amazon parrot! Animals outside that give chase, very very different story. With that said, never leave Coonhounds and non-canines together unattended.

                            A photo of a "disagreement":
