  • Leather Skin

I have been bathing a dog each week that it skin is like leather. Any idea what would cause this. The customer has spent hundreds on vet bills and they don't know what it causing it. It is not scabies. It is a white dog.

I have seen this with dogs who have extream allergies. I'm not sure that a cure for the hyperkertinosis (sp) is out there. I think with extreme meds the liver in the long run will fail with age. A second opinion from a vet who deals with dogs who suffer from allergies would be in order. Blood work up and skin test is in order to find the allergins.

Thanks guys. I feel so bad for this dog. It hardly has any hair on its chest and you know it feels so much better after its bath.

I groom a cocker who has had the same problem. Allergies were the cause, but he was so allergic to everything that everything they tried failed. Until six months ago. The vet put him on Atopica.

This dog was completely bald on the rear half of his body, and his skin was thickened...like elephant skin. He had scanty hair on his legs, chest, neck and face. He itched like crazy. Now he's not itching, and even the hair on his butt is growing back. The change has been amazing.

The biggest drawback is the price. It's majorly expensive. Especially for a larger dog.

i get alot of flack for this one from alot of other groomers but I have dealt with several different skin issues in my 15 yrs of grooming with 6 yrs ina vets clinic which i have also used this remody.this is the only human shampoo I will ever recomend for dog use .less expencive than prescription shampoos yet I have had better results with this particular brand.nutregina T gel this is a tar and sulfa shampoo which will exfoliate the dead skin to promote new healthy growth. formula is diluted for easier application leave sit on pet for 10-15 min then rinse well dry and style pet as normal.i have used this product on my own pets in the past .to relieve several skin disorders such as forms of sebria , hot spots, dermatitus,,egzima.flea allergies or bites.as well as the unknown issues that vets cannot figure out.this also includes non comunicable mange.
this product i have used for yrs it leaves the coat clean managable and smelling clean unlike other tar and sulfa shampoos.

It could possibly be a case of seborhheic keratosis. I have a yorkie that I do with the same condition. Very, very severe - the other groomers in the salon won't touch him. I use a shampoo given to me by my vet. Although, in order for it to make an impression in the dog's condition, it should be used about 3 times per week.
