Doesn't this seem AWFUL low? I have a possible part time job offer, but am only being offered 35%. I would be able to set my own hours and I think they will have someone else answer the phone, but I have to bathe my own pets. I really think I am going to tell them I need 45, that's not unreasonable is it?

Yep too low
Unless they are charging $100.00 per dog or more? I was offered a job a while back at 40 percent, someone else bathed the dog, but I would do the total drying. They charged too low prices too. They also were acting lots like an employer, but paying like IRC. Not for me for sure.Money will buy you a pretty good dog but it won't buy the wag of it's tail.

Job offer
Way,way too low. I've never made less than 50%. Keep on lookin.......

Stephen: Keep in mind I have seen upscale shops paying 35% with upscale prices that provide bathers and you would make more than other businesses in the relative area paying 55% and you have to do the bathing. Never stop consideration by the percentage amount alone, you really do have to conduct a study of the offer and what others are offering in your area.

The % depends on what you are doing...I mean that by ...if you are in a shop that has rough-in groomers, bathers and finish groomers, and you are ...say the finish groomer...no , not at all. 35% to just finish a dog, maybe 20 minutes on the table...? Not a problem, and a shop like that would have enough volume to keep you busy and you'd make a pretty good living.
But on the other hand if you have to do more then just finish....then IMO 35% is way low. If you have to bath, and do the finish...sorry, I don't know of a lot of groomers that would work for that low of a %.
Are there other benefits to off-set the low commission (35%)?

That's pretty much what I thought. I just wanted to make sure I am not being unreasonable. The lady is just opening her shop and was saying 35%, I guess because she was going to do advertising and stuff. But 35 seemed waaay low to me. Plus I would have to bathe dry and groom. On with the search I suppose...although I will tell her that I will take 45%, and that if she wants a good groomer that is really what she should offer. Part-time jobs are hard to find, especially since I only wanna work on Tues and Sun!

Let me ask this:
How many of you make 50% but then pay ALL of your own taxes? How about pay a certain amount for a bather?
On another post someone makes 50% but they get charged $5 for each dog bathed and dried.
Think about this? 50% on $50 = $25
50% on $50 - $5 = $20 which is the same as 40%
Now lets look at taxes as an IC you pay roughly 28%
as an Employee you pay roughly 20%... there is another 8%.
How about you do all of your own bathing and drying: You can do 8 dogs a day at an average of $50 (which is a slightly high average) this equals $800 and your take is $200.
-vs-
You have a bther and receptionist you can do 10 dogs at $50 each equals $500 BUT only make 40% your take home is STILL $200. Now what if this shop has a HIGHER average of $60 you would be making MORE than if you had 50% and had to do all of your own bathing and drying.
PLEASE- everyone get off of the "I wouldn't work for less", consider the perks and benefits. I am SORRY but If I wanted and needed a job I would work at McDonalds as opposed to going hungry.

if someone expects a 50% commission ... they had better be bringing in their own clients, bathing their own dogs, answering phones, scheduling appointments & paying half the overhead charges. For a shop owner to pay the expenses on 1/2 of a groom is not easy ... and really not fair IMO. a 50% commission is more like a partnership ..... unfairly so because the business owner is at much more risk than the employee.

having to do 10 dogs to make the same as doing 8 dogs @ 50% doesnt sound like a good deal......

I am an employee, not an IC. I make 50% commission. When I started, I had NO clientel, as I had just moved to the area from another state, and I knew no one, much less had a clientel. I pretty much set my own hours, and I leave when I'm finished. And I can take as many breaks as I feel necessary, so long as I get the dogs groomed in a timely manner.
I don't answer phones, nor do I collect payments/do check-out. I don't have to do laundry, although I chip in when necessary. I don't supply any consumable products except some specialty fabrics for bandannas that I prefer over the ones provided by my employer. I clean up my mess at the end of the day, but the heavy cleaning is done by someone else.
I provide my own tools and pay for sharpening. My employers supplies my tables, dryers, cages, shampoos and conditioners, first aid supplies, ear cleaner, etc. I am allowed to decide which shampoos and conditioners I want, within reason.
I do have a limited number of paid sick days, a paid vacation and paid holidays. My employer will reimburse me for attending seminars and trade shows, up to a certain amount. I haven't been able to get her to send me to Hershey yet, but I keep hoping, lol.
The only benny I don't have at this point is insurance. I'm working on that one, too.
And even considering all that, I wouldn't work there for 35%.

Like some others have said, 35% is only low if you're doing all the work AND the prices are low as well.
If a yorkie starts at $80, then I'd be a happy to have 35%, but if a yorkie starts at $30, FORGET IT, no way Jose, I'll work at McDonald's too. If I wanted that kind of pay, I'd go back to being a social worker, gag gag gag.
Honestly though, you can't just say, "50% or ELSE!" because it really depends on the prices being charged, the extras, the bennies etc...
