  • Sinus Issues anyone?

I wanted to share something that was done to me during a Reiki session. I have severe sinus issues that seem to be inflammatory or allergic in nature- they come and go and cause very, very bad headaches when they hit.

My Reiki practitioner told me that the base of the skull is a key area related to the sinuses. She said it had something to do with drainage. During sessions where I was having a flare-up, she lays me on my back, forms her hand into a fist, places it at the base of my skull (top of neck) and holds it there.

I started doing this to myself at home and it works really well. I just lay in bed on my back, form a fist and place it in that area; allow the weight of your head to press down on the fist. She said a tennis ball also works well also.

I know this sounds really simple, but it really works. My sinus headaches are enough to make me want to cry all day - it feels like my head is going to explode. This technique is the only thing I have found, in the last 5 years since the sinus issue started, that helps helps relieve the pressure and pain. Excedrine helps at times also, but not always.

Thanks for the tip. I myself and many of my friends suffer from sinus issues. I will try it the next time I'm having problems!

      thanks

Thanks so much for that tip. I'm searching right now for a tennis ball that hasn't got the fuzz chewed off yet. I figured the tennis ball might be more comfortable than holding my fist behind my head but I may not have that choice. LOL

Good to know! Kind of OT, but how do you like Reiki? I've heard great things but haven't tried it.

I don't know about a fist to the neck, but I do know that a Nettie pot works wonders clearing up a sinus infection. You can get one at any drug store for around 15 bucks.

Ananis, The Reiki was very relaxing. I only did it a few times though as part of massage.

A1, I agree about the neti pot. I like to use mine after grooming lots of Cockers; when I feel like my sinus cavities are swelling up from all the dander and shaved hair particles it really flushes everything out. I almost died the first time I used it though - didn't add enough sea salt and it felt like I poured burning acid into my head - ouch!

I can really guage how blocked my sinus is with the pot. Sometimes the water flows really well through one side, and is barely a trickle coming out the inflammed side.

amen to that, I could not live w/o my netti pot! I ran out of the powder to put in it right before christmas and was too tired/busy to go get more. All the dander of the pre holiday rush caused a sinus infection. I bought more powder and my sinus infection was almost cleared up when the bronchitis settled in. I believe that the drainage into my chest is what caused the bronchitis. If only I had made an effort to get some more powder sooner and I might not have had so much sickness in the last 2 months. It is something so simple, but always makes my sinuses feel so much better, gets a lot of hair out too!

I have pretty severe allergies (I am allergic to both cats and dogs). I also have a deviated septum. So I tried the netipot once and experienced the burning acid sensation. That triggered the eyes watering and the nose running and I was in a worse condition than before I started. So do you think I didn't add enough salt? I haven't tried it again since.

Try putting peroxide in the netti pot. It's pretty dramatic.

Yea the burning is from the plain water hitting the mucous membranes. It has to have the correct amount of salt. I add about a generous 1/4 tsp to my pot, and I use plain sea salt. It doesn't burn at all with enough salt...but you may as well dump acid in there if there isn't enough salt...ouch!

Can you use too much salt?

I would imagine you could add too much, but I would think it would have to be a -lot-. I don't measure my salt, just eyeball it, so I know I have added way too much many times. Never had a problem yet.

OMG I imagine my head exploding!!

I buy the pre-measured non burning salt packets, they have just the right amount to match your sinuses. I too am often amazed at what comes out my nose!

No, but, you have to have a roll of toilet paper in hand and hang over the toilet. You nose will run for awhile but, ou are literally cleansed of infection & allergens. I used to date a cardiologist who recommended it for a long term infection. His clients who cannot take antibiotics found it yseful so he told me about it.

Forget the tennis balls, they do not work as good as fingers. Look on line for a molded set of finger tips made out of plastic, you lay on your back with this under your neck and you wouldn't believe the difference because it is hard plastic and the fingers feel just like a real person. The tennis balls will make it feel better but this thing is great. I will look and see if I can find it and post what I am talking about.
