  • HELP

I just did not know what to do with the top knot on this cocker. The way the hair was she looked like a wild woman. The owner just wanted it trimmed.

Lisa, take a snap-on comb over it. Also, did she not want the face shaved?

Usually cockers get their face shaved with a #10 or a #7, or #7 in reverse. Be sure to use a #10 along the lower lip, where their teeth hit it, as this needs to be shaved out for sanitary reasons I believe (Helly said it once, but I can't remember what it is).

PS: I think it looks nice on the head, but maybe take a little more off, using a snap-on comb. Snap-ons also make it easier to scissor!

      Thinning Shears

I've used thinning shears before on the top knot, blending it a bit more. It gives a more tighter knot. Funny how some people like the longer faces left on cocker's. It gives them a whole new look - I think she looks cute. I love cockers!

If she still wants the muzzel fluffy you could leave it or 10,15. Longer I would use 5f reverse. I would do the top knot with a #1 guard. Follow up with thinners to shape.

Almost all dogs have a lip fold, but in cockers it's particularly deep, and collects food and ick. If you don't keep it clipped out they can develope lip fold pyoderma...an infection in the skin. Even if you're leaving the face fuzzy you can zip out the lip fold. Pull the lower lip back so it's tight, and just touch the clippers into the area where the fold is. It won't show.

I've done guard combs and thinners. Works either way. I do the combs from back to front. I've done a cocker with typical cocker cut, shaved face and all with just the dippy curls on top. Looks funny, but the people like it.
