The travel industry is a huge business. In the US alone, spending on travel hit $1,036 billion in 2017.
But a big chunk of travel spending isn’t for people, but for their pets. Some 68% of U.S. households, about 85 million families, own a pet according to a survey by the American Pet Products Association. In 2017, $69.51 billion was spent on pets, including more than $6 billion on services like boarding and grooming.
When those 85 million pet owners hit the road, they basically have two choices. Take their pet with them, or board it, essentially getting someone else to take care of it. (This is not just a leisure travel issue; millions of business travelers need to make arrangements for pets as well.) Both the airline “carry or ship” pet transport business, and that of animal boarding, are big and getting bigger, as childless Millennials plus Generation X and Babyboomer empty nesters turn to “pet parenting.”...................
