A doggy grooming parlour’s plan to build a “dog cafe and cocktail bar” has been approved.

Despite concerns about “howling dogs” “drunken behaviour” and dog poo, the owners of Paws and Claws pet grooming and Nibblers pet store were granted permission to extend the retail unit on the corner of The Wynd, in Marske .

But Andrea Summersgill’s plans for a doggy-friendly bar serving prosecco to humans and pawsecco to dogs until 11pm, seven days a week, split opinion.

At a meeting of Redcar and Cleveland Council’s Regulatory Committee on Thursday, Stephen Shaw, who lives on nearby St Germain’s Lane, said he and his neighbours had concerns about “loss of privacy” and “noise pollution”.

He asked members to follow the advice of an environmental protection officers who added a condition that a “detailed acoustic report” should be completed before any development takes place.

Another resident said the venue was so close to her home that the extra noise from a cocktail bar would be a problem.

She said: “During the daytime, I can hear the shop telephone ringing and the call itself.”

And a local dad said he was worried about “drunken behaviour” disturbing the sleep of his 15-year-old daughters during their GCSE studies.

But Cllr Steve Turner, the Conservative councillor for Longbeck, said while he agreed there were legitimate concerns: “I’m just a bit surprised that you think there would be sleep deprivation of two 15-year-olds - the licence is for 11pm.”

Three people spoke in support of the dog cafe and the applicant, Ms Summersgill, who said she owns nine dogs herself, also addressed the committee.

She said she would work with the council to ensure any concerns about noise were mitigated against by ensuring the bi-folding doors were closed by 9pm and playing only background music.

She said she would employ a further four people as a result of the venture and added that all dog waste would be properly disposed of.
