  • Plush Puppy Keeps Dogs Looking Good

Nancy Benton decided early on she liked working with animals and for 25 years has owned the Plush Puppy in Newbury Park.

Ten-year-old Katie enjoys swimming in her family’s pool, but sometimes the pool water can render her golden hair — OK, her golden retriever doggie fur — a little too, well, aromatic for her family.

No problem. Not far away in Newbury Park is Katie’s beauty shop, a.k.a. Plush Puppy, where owner Nancy Benton and her staff take good care of Katie with just the right blend of bathing, cutting, brushing and love.

“We trust Nancy and her staff to do a good job,” said Katie’s owner Mary Davis, a real estate agent who for a quarter century has brought all of her family’s dogs (including a springer spaniel and Australian shepherd) to Plush Puppy. “We like how they groom and cut Katie, their prices are competitive, and they are always on time. We’ve been very happy with their service.”

On Sept. 1, Plush Puppy celebrated its 25th anniversary under Benton’s ownership in the Wendy Kimber Plaza, not too bad for someone who bought her shop by mortgaging her VW Jetta and, since 2005, has operated her business as a single mom raising four children.

“It took a leap of faith to make this happen,” said Benton, a graduate of nearby Newbury Park High School who worked at Plush Puppy under its previous owner and bought the 780-square-foot shop when that person retired. “It was a calculated risk, and it hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve made it work.”...............
