  • Groomer, DIY to Open in Blair

When Kristie Nichols decided to search for ways to occupy her time when her son leaves for kindergarten in the fall, she wanted to use her experience working with animals. The Blair resident discovered that the city has an unmet need: dog groomers.

Nichols is opening Bark Boutique Paw Spa at 202 S. 13th St. — the former location of Murphy's New and Used — on April 12.

"I've always loved this building," she said.

Nichols worked for 20 years at the Nebraska Humane Society. She and her husband, Ronnie, and two sons have three horses, six chickens, a cat and a 3-year-old bulldog, Gertie. The family moved about a year ago from Fort Calhoun to Blair.

Nichols didn't have professional dog grooming experience, so she apprenticed with a groomer.

One half of her building will be a grooming shop, with kennels and crates to keep dogs short term while they wait for their owners to arrive. The other half will be a do-it-yourself dog wash and pet supply store, with specialty dog food, toys and collars.

Nichols said that the dog wash is a convenient way for dog owners to clean their pets without "destroying" their homes in the process.

"They don't have to get their bathrooms all messy," she said.
