When Tyson's in Cherokee closed, Connie Ploeger lost her job. Not one to take things like that laying down, Connie asked a friend who ran a pet grooming service if she would share the tricks of the trade. She drove to Sergent Bluff three days a week for a couple of months, and now she runs her own pet grooming service in Alta.
She and her fiance Randy Fulkerth did a lot of remodeling to get the downstairs set up for the influx of animals. Now she has a waterproof floor and a waiting room set up for pets and their owners, should the owner want to wait while their dog is getting shampooed. So far things are going great, and Connie exudes excitement when she talks about her new business. She uses baby-talk when referring to the dogs. "My favorite dogs to clip are poodles, because you can sculpt them" she says. "Schihtzus are second, and they seem to be the most popular. I've had seven this week."

She can shampoo large breeds, too. "I had a Saint Bernard that barked when it came in the first time, but now he knows just where to go, and he automatically moves where I need him," she says with obvious satisfaction.....
