Three white dogs the size of small horses bound full-speed through the snow at Melissa Verplank’s farm, barking ferociously and lunging toward the silver sedan that crunches down her long snow-covered driveway.

Their heads are enormous. They have large sharp teeth, and lots of them.

I am not the first person in this driveway to fleetingly think, “I soon might be dead.”

Open the car door slowly. Coo, “Hello, doggies. Nice, big doggies.” The three dogs shove their huge heads into the car.

Then, magically, they turn into big furry pussycats as the sound of Verplank’s commanding voice rings through the icy air.

Forget whispering. Verplank is a dog wonder woman.
