  • Rat Poison!!!!!!

I heard today from a customer that they found rat poison in the tainted pet foods. It was bad enough when it was thought to be caused by a mold or fungus, but to find out that it was probably put in on purpose just sickens me. What is wrong w/people!!!

the latest news is that they THINK it was poor quality food storage from a chinese plant not intentional by someone. my beef with companies like purina, iams, nutro etc, is that the bottom line is most important. whatever the cheapest place to get it is where they will get it. before people take offense, there was almost a 2 month period before the recall and the first complaints of a problem. menu foods was notified on feb 20th by one of the companies, who by the way did not issue an immediate reall, i don't know which. didn't test until a week later and the recall began march 16th. my distibutor heard about the recall from the news. unlike the diamond recall where they pulled everything because they didn't know which batch was tainted. not only did the distributors know about it. many pet stores were called personally by diamond to get the stuff off the shelves.

Not to be gross but I had read somewhere years back in a holistic pet journal that your normal everyday pet food can contain things like road kill, chicken feet, chicken beaks and all sorts of leftovers because they don't have the same standards as people food.

Maybe they were using some tainted animal meat from another critter that ate the poison. Just a disgusting thought. I try and buy only whole/holistic pet food with no by-products (leftovers) and pray the packaging is honest as to the ingredients.

I would hate to believe anyone would add the posion on purpose but hopefully it will raise awareness as to how pet foods are made.

            It's just plain wrong

I didn't realize they didn't recall it right away. I can't believe they didn't get the word out sooner. We're so vulnerable as we depend on different processing and storage facilities to act responsibly. You have to wonder about human foods as well.

Diamond didn't have any food affected by this recall. It was just a comparison of Diamond's response when they became aware they had a problem last year, as opposed to Menu's response in this situation.

I am Paranoid about dog food now

I had a client that has her food delivered to her door. She is a vegetarian herself, but i think the food in called california something. I want to switch when this is gone. I want something hopefully safe. Today someone had softies by the patio door. Jax or Traveler...Halle is usually separated from the boys cuz Jax doesn't want to play. I have been double-protioning Traveleer and he doesn't have a boney buttie anymore. But maybe too much made him have softies. Switching food has to be gradual from one mix w/ new....altho I have switched drys without mixing one over to the new one. All I need is big 3 dogs worth of softies to clean up when I get home.......What dry foods do you recommend?I like the delivery idea.

She may be using California Natural which is a good food. Some pet supply stores (individually owned, not corporate) carry it.

I order my food from Timberwolf Organics. My chow chow is prone to allergy troubles and I've had great results from the Timberwolf. If you order from the company, there is no charge for shipping.

My guys are on California Natural now, and doing very well. They both get the Herring and Sweet Potato dry, Oli also gets some canned Herring, and Whizzy gets canned Evo. Oli can't eat the Evo, it makes him quite sick.

California Nautral is manufactured by Natura, which also makes Innova and Evo. All of them are manufactured in the U.S. and none of their foods are out-sourced to other companies.

We just recieved a fax from Natura this week assuring us that none of their foods were affected by the recall.

I feed Spike Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, also not affected by the recall. He's as healthy as a horse.

If I'm not feeding raw I'm feeding Innova Evo. I also had great results with Solid Gold (the cocker got to fat on Evo).

The rat posion is also a Chemo therpary drug used to treat the stuborn cancers in people(small doses). In large doses it shuts down kindey function that why its used as rat posion.

I heard it was sprayed on the fields cause they had a rat problem, and I guess they never washed it off, if you can even wash off a chemical like that.

The husband of a lady I work with has taken this chemical as chemo. That's scary to think.

I heard on the news (or was it on here?) that the companies can list their ingredients as chicken, beef, etc but if they find a cheaper protien source, they can use that and leave chicken, beef, etc as the ingredient, as long as they change it back to chicken, beef, etc. within 12 months. Has anyone heard of this?

Once I was bored at work and picked up a thing of that cesars food that an owner had brought for their dog to eat, and read the ingredients. One of the things listed was "meat by products." I've seen 'chicken by products," "beef by products," etc but you know it's bad when they don't even say what KIND of meat! Ew

Mollie is getting chicken soup for the dog lover's soul right now, but I tend to switch her around. (Shame on me) She can't get beef but seems to do OK on chicken so far. Her skin has been itchy lately and I can't find any reason for it, so I might try changing her diet to see if that helps at all.

i am so glad i chose Solid Gold right from the start!!!..i beleive they are very particular about the quality of the ingredients that is used in their food. this is such a tragic thing that has happened to these beloved pets....maybe people will see the importance of choosing a premium type dog food and not the cheapest thing they can find. there was not one dogfood on that recall list that i would feed any of my dogs. i think i read on the old board, an article revealing some of the horific ingredients(like euthanized dogs with flea collars on??) that some well known dog food were calling "meat by-product"...where is that article??? anyone remember?
