  • book keeping

    Hey everyone,
I am opening a new shop and am a little unsure of how I am going to do my book keeping. I am sure my accountant will advise me on this subject but I was wondering what you guys use. I will be doing some retail as well. Do you use computer software? If so, what one? I saw something about a pet123 but couldn't find anything online about it. Do you do your books daily or weekly? Just trying to figure it all out.

I downloaded the trial software for pet123 and it is great. keeps track of everything for you including taxes. It can also be downloaded to Quickbooks which my accountant recomended to me. He said it would make his job easier which means paying him a lot less money.

i am very detailed. the irs will expect you to keep a receipt book, and a separate app't book. my receipt book lists customer name, date, state, grooming amt, sales tax, retail, and a total column. it is totalled weekly, monthly and yearly, that is in addition to keeping a DOME simpllified monthly bookkeeping record. the receipt book is a simple 6 column ledger. i can not use a computer bookkeeping program. doing it this way i can tell you anyhting about my business

Why can't you use a computer program. These programs make like sooo easy.

partly it is the lack of detail. i'm just punching numbers in and there is no real feel for how i'm doing. i simply prefer it this way.

I love Pet123, it's so easy to look up sales taxes and so forth when it's time to send them in. Takes care of payroll too which is great since it has a time clock and everything on it. With a click of a button we can also see how many clients we have and how many times someone has been to see us. It's amazing to see how much money a specific client has spent over time.

I just downloaded the 123pet software and am just trying to get a feel for it. I think I need to go through some of the learning stuff on it. Im trying to figure out how you enter a retail sale on it.

Ok I think I have the software figured out, the only thing I did was enter a fake grooming and sale and then I closed out the cash box for the day and now I can't figure out how to get rid of what I did lol.

I must be old fashioned. I still do my bookkeeping by hand.

123 pet for me. I like how easy it is to use. And I like how you can put a pic of the dog in it so there is no question what you did last time. Or you can show it to the client and ask is there anything you want done differently. It is too cool. I want to use the online booking one day as well.

I use Quickbooks Pro. Both my original and current accountant recommended it. I did have some challenges in learning it, but there are many CD tutorials out there as well as QB all day seminars. (which I intend to go to the next one just to brush up on some of the features I currently don't use)

I use K-9 Koordinator, I found it a the Grooming Expo in PA. It was a little hard to use, but I got it pretty well figured out, it will do sales tax, retail, kennel, boarding, grooming, mailing system, keep pics of the owner and dog, all the client info, and a report about anything you would want. It will even give you the top 10 spenders of the year. Good luck.
