  • IC Independent Contractor

A legal category of worker defined by the Internal Revenue Service. The key to the definition is that, unlike employees, independent contractors retain control over how the work they are hired to do gets done; the person or company paying the independent contractor controls only the outcome--the product or service.

Most pet groomers do not qualify as IC's even though the employer may regard their position as such. IC's have extra tax liabilities since they must file their taxes as a self-employed person. Always consult an accountant or bookkeeper for assistance with figuring your liabilities and requirements as an IC. You often have to pay taxes quarterly AND annually.
