  • DBA Doing Business As

When a business owner operates a company under a name different from his or her real name they are "doing business as." The owner must file a "fictitious name statement" or similar document with the appropriate agency, most often the county clerk of the county in which the business resides or operates. Consumers have the right to discover the names of the business owners, which is important if a consumer needs to sue the business. Sometimes if you form a corporation or other organization this procedure is not necessary locally because they are commonly filed and formed with the state government.
