PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (CBS12) — A woman accused of stealing a blind and diabetic dog from a local pet store is due in court.

According to court records, a plea conference is scheduled for Heather Ryan Tuesday at the Palm Beach County Courthouse.

Police say a pet owner dropped her 11-year-old Maltese mix off for a routine grooming appointment last April at the Petco store at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens; when she went back to pick up Teddy, he was already gone.

Police later arrested Heather Ryan, who claimed the dog was a gift from a friend.

She was charged with grand theft and released on bond.

Earlier this year, the court ordered Ryan to undergo a mental health evaluation; the results of that could play a role in how Ryan pleas at Tuesday’s hearing.
